For many people, homelessness begins with racism. Research shows that Blacks are more likely than Whites to become unhoused.  There is also evidence that indicates that they stay unhoused for a longer period of time than their White counterparts.  The reality of homelessness points to prevalent racial injustices that are deeply rooted in our society.  Racism has excluded people of color from the housing market through practices such as redlining. Lack of housing and poor/inadequate housing contributes to many health problems in adults and can also have harmful effects on childhood development.

Therefore, RSB is keenly involved in recognizing and addressing race as a social construct.  Race matters and racism influences everything from small interpersonal interactions to larger institutional behavior.  We at RSB facilitate dialogues around race and racism through Community Story Exchanges, Community Connection Circles, and Conversations around

Stigma and Implicit Bias.
